DreamBeam from GlucoMetrix AG is developed by Fraunhofer Institute
On 20.12.2007, from GlucoMetrix AG,
I got the message that I had been
waiting for. The development of the DreamBeam from GlucoMetrix AG is
going on.
(Since1993 a device that measures
blood-glucose without drawing any
blood is called DreamBeam)
In the press release, one learns
that the GlucoMetrix AG has signed a
cooperation agreement with the Fraunhofer
Institut für Zuverlässigkeit und Mikrointegration (IZM) in
Chemnitz (Fraunhofer
Institute for Reliability and
Microintegration (IZM) in Chemnitz. )
What is microintegration?
Micro-Integration consists of
Integration and miniaturization.
Integration means that something single is braught into something large
and is adjusted to the large one. In this case, individual
electronic components are b rought into a common carrier such as
silicon. A circuit
manufactured like this is called an integrated circuit.
Miniaturization means, in this context, that the
building blocks of an
electronic circuit which can have the size of a washing machine can all
be reduced to
one another, so that they, for an example, may fit into a wristwatch.
A
transistor, a major electronic component, which is large enough to hold
it in your hands, today can be decreased in a manner, that you only can
see it with a microscope.
Of course, a circuit with many large individually conected transistors,
resistors, capacitors,
circuit boards and cables is very vulnerable to mechanical influences
....
and expensive. When all the components are bound together into a single
integrated circuit network, then this circuit is much more reliable and
cheaper .....
That means, then, that the Fraunhofer
Institut für Zuverlässigkeit und Mikrointegration (IZM) in
Chemnitz (Fraunhofer
Institute for
Reliability and Micro-Integration,) in cooperation with the GlucoMetrix
AG are working toigether to build a reliable working Dream Beam
at low
cost which every diabetic can afford.
"The collaboration is an important step towards
improving the quality of life of diabetic patients. Together with the
Fraunhofer Institute, we will be able to market a bloodless affordable
device for everyone. We will shorten the time for the development of
the device significantly." said Paul
Schikora, chairman of Glucometrix AG."
"Glucometrix
has a very promising application at the start," confirmed Otto
Hermsdorfer, responsible for industry contacts at the Fraunhofer IZM in
Berlin. "We have great interest in building
prototypes that work under the dayly live conditions. We
want to develop them and to bring them to market."
The
Fraunhofer
Institut für Zuverlässigkeit und Mikrointegration (IZM) in
Chemnitz (Fraunhofer
Institute for Reliability and Microintegration) specializes in systems
integration and packaging of electronic products.
What is systems integration?
Systems integration is an activity
of a business (in this case, the
company is the Fraunhofer Institute). The company adapts software and
hardware products of an other manufacturer for a particular
purpose.
So, for an example, if someone has
a green car (GlucoMetrix AG) and
another one has a fitting, but black door (software or hardware
supplier), then he goes into
a workshop (Fraunhofer Institute), and it cares for it, that the color
fits to the color of the car. Will say they make it fitting.
The workshop (Fraunhofer
Institute) makes the system integration.
The car is the system. The
painters are the system integrators of the
Fraunhofer Institute in this example for explanation.
What is Packaging?
Packaging is not only the packing
of an item itself, but the process to
prepare a thing so that it finally can be sold.
The GlucoMetix AG was founded in
2001. Focus of the company's research
and development are things, to improve the quality of life of
diabetic
patients.
I am pleased now about the unpacking
of the new, for all
diabetics affordable, precisely measuring, reliable, DreamBeam from
GlucoMetrix AG. Or should I say Unpackaging?
